by Alexandra

A Zen garden is a shallow pit that contains sand or gravel. Zen gardens also contain rocks and on occasion may have grass or other natural items. There are different types of Zen gardens, but the most commonly known type is called karesansui. The known father of the Zen gardens, muso soseki was a Zen priest. Zen gardens decrease the levels of your stress – creating a healthier way of living. Zen gardens were originally called Japanese rock gardens until 1935; a writer named Loraine called them Zen gardens in her book ‘100 gardens of Kyoto’. In conclusion Zen gardens have been a healthy way of living since the 11th century.
